Analogue/Digital 13

We’re getting involved with Analogue/Digital this year. It’s right around the corner, in fact it’s even closer than that – it’s this coming Friday and Saturday. They’ve completely sold out (of regular seats) – but they’re in the process of cramming a few more in. So if you’re still interested you better get clicking.

We’re also thrilled to be part of a Masterclass at Impressworks on the Gold Coast. We’ll be taking a bunch of people through the process of designing for letterpress, setting up artwork to print, and letterpress printing.

It’s going to be wild fun, informative and inspirational as you can see from the program for the conference, below. If we don’t see you at the workshop or the conference then we’ll catch you at the after party!

Upfront

UPFRONT-poster-A4.2

We’re very excited to be involved with this project put together by Marcus Dixon – who you might remember from some of our past collaborations (he is part of Malade Pathetics). As the poster suggests, Upfront is a celebration of t-shirt art and culture. The line up is crazy good – with the likes of Numbskull, French, our buddies Andrew Fairclough and Michael Danischewski plus a bunch of other talented artists, like this funny bloke Justin Hager.

There’ll be screen prints, shirts and booze so if you’re around Newcastle way, make sure to get along to Curve Gallery at 37 Watt St, Newcastle – and check out the event on Facebook.

Full Time

Today marks the first day of our first full time addition to The Hungry Workshop team. Adam Flannery is a skilled letterpress craftsman with a design background to boot. He will join us in all manner of projects right through from answering design briefs through to perfecting their execution on the press.

He’s a Newcastle native, who has relocated here via Sydney so he’s come a long way to our fine city of Melbourne. So if you bump into him on the street be sure to be sure to give him a warm welcome. You can also say hello to him on twitter or drop him an email.

Wardrobe Weekender

What are you up to for this year’s Melbourne Fashion Festival? We’re getting ourselves involved with Wardrobe Weekender. You can come along and swap your once-loved clothes for new treasures and browse a selection of local makers’ wares, like our finely crafted letterpress goods. You’ll find the event up in Captains of Industry, and along with fun fashion stuff, there will be a bar too. Gearing up: Letterpress internships for 2013

We are now fielding new internship applications for 2013. While the program is relatively similar to last time, the application process has changed a little so please read carefully:

The Hungry Workshop is looking to fill a three-month internship role starting February 2013.

We’re not your average design studio. We are a studio specialising in crafted executions of conceptual design through letterpress. Design is communication, and letterpress is an expressive, commercial scale printmaking tool.

As well as assisting us with our design projects such as branding, packaging, promotional pieces and stationery, through your internship you’ll be exposed to our collaborators: other leading creative individuals, design studios, illustrators and agencies. We curate exhibitions and create our own paper products for retail, so you’ll also need a penchant for self-initiated, experimental studio projects.

You’ll be working with us on all aspects of our output, including but not limited to:

• Print production and finishing (punching, folding and packing products/stationery)
• Mixing ink, cutting paper and other letterpress printing related tasks
• Finished art, preparing files for output, colour separations and proofing
• Research, concept and design for studio and client projects

Who are you?

You’re an all rounder. Being a small studio, we are all hands on deck, all the time. You’re independent. You have incredible attention to detail. You’re quick on your feet, able to take direction but also work without much. Someone called you pedantic once and you took it as a compliment. You have a quick wit and an unhealthy sense of humour. Your head is full to the brim with ideas and you can articulate them clearly when one slips out. You’re highly skilled in the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator. You’re a positive person. A design zealot that is passionate about paper, print and colour. And, you are cooking up an awesome side project at the moment.

The Mr. Moorhouse Collection

If you follow us on Instagram, you probably noticed that over the weekend we took a rare trip south of the river. We visited one Mr. Philip Moorhouse, a man who has managed to compile one of Australia’s most comprehensive private collections of wood type.

Mr. Moorhouse described the act of perusing his collection as ‘shaking hands with history’. Each drawer holds new treasures; from the patchwork tragedy of a collection of orphaned ampersands to the exquisite complete font of a bifurcated tuscan. As we held each piece of wood type in our hands, Philip would explain its heritage, from where it came and how it was crafted. He is able to identify whether a font is machine routed or carved by hand, and we learned how that difference in production technique affects the design of a typeface.

His collection of wood type is supported by a comprehensive array of rare books: type specimen manuals are key tools which he uses to cross-reference a particular font, to further categorise its model, maker and origin.

A kid in a candy store is certainly one way to describe how we felt visiting the collection, but the most exciting prospect is our future collaborations with Mr. Moorhouse.

A full stop.

Today we are putting the finishing touches on a wedding invitation for very dear friends and then we are officially putting a stop to an incredible year. Two thousand and twelve was the year we really made Melbourne our home, and set up our workshop the way we had imagined it. It was the year we curated two exhibitions, Trophy Lives and Rituals with Sydney and Melbourne showings. It was the year our our experimental printmaking work was exhibited across Australia: at Board in Melbourne, Look See in Newcastle and Shoot in Brisbane. To everyone who came along and supported these projects – thank you!

It was the year we spoke at Sex, Drugs & Helvetica and answered your questions at AGDA Question Time. It was the year we were published in Process magazine and guest blogged for The Design Files. It was the year we helped bring carefully crafted brands to life and helped a few cute couples kick-off their weddings in style. It was the year we got a hand from some incredible interns: Tim, Magda, Kirsty and Jana – thank you!

It was the year we brought Olive into our family, and the year one half of the workshop and quite a few of our friends said farewell to their 20′s.

Even though we are looking forward to a little break, we are far more excited about 2013 – new collaborations, projects and brands that will spring to life. To everyone who stuck with us this year: our clients, collaborators, supporters and friends – thank you.

We’ll be back on the 7th of January – ’til then have a safe and merry Christmas and a rocking and rolling new year.

Australian Design Biennale

We are very fortunate and honoured to be among those in the Australian design community who received awards over the weekend at the Australian Design Biennale. Both our aerograms and our invitation for Jaimee & JK were awarded in the print category. Returning from its successful debut in Sydney at Koskela, Rituals has arrived in Melbourne for its second showing. The exhibition features limited edition prints and unique, one-of-a-kind overprints combining the work of Beci Orpin, Ben Ashton-Bell, Drunk Park, Eirian Chapman, Georgia Perry, Kindred Studio, Lauren Carney, Luke Lucas, Malade Pathetics and Spew Corp. Rituals explores the concept of identity, collaboration and the unintended compositions that come through the ritual of printmaking.

The exhibition opens in Melbourne this coming Sunday, 2 December, from 5–7pm, at our Northcote workshop.

The exhibition will be running alongside our Christmas trading hours – we’ll be open to the public on Sundays from 10am–4pm each week leading up to Christmas so if you can’t make it this Sunday you can pop in later for another peek. Markit

This coming Sunday we are getting involved in the madness that is Markit @ Fed Square. If you are looking for a little something for someone special this Christmas it will be a perfect opportunity. Perhaps a limited edition letterpress print, lovingly hand-printed on our Asbern Proof Press and discounted for the festive season? Maybe a set of fluroescent Aerograms or cosy Flanno Cards? Create Awards = Good Times

Last Friday night we went along to the Desktop Create Awards, and boy did we have a good time. We had a few of our letterpress projects from the last year shortlisted – The Finders Keepers in the illustration category, Into The Rabbit Hole and The Flanno Cards in the print commercial category. And we were pretty stoked when our letterpress Board for NGV got up on the big screen for Highly Commended in the print creative category.

& Stay Hungry

Sex, Drugs & Helvetica was awesome. For those that didn’t make it along, we spoke about our experience starting our studio and recounted some of the lessons we learned along the way. It was a really cathartic process for us to take stock of where we’ve been and what we’ve been up to. So, for those that came along and sat through our presentation – thank you for lending us your ear. Also, a big thanks to the crew who put it together: Nick, Zack, Tenielle and Andy for his awesome MC’ing – not to mention all the awesome volunteers.

Rituals recap

We spent a few days up in Sydney for Rituals and we had a pretty excellent time. We hung the show with a little help from James the hanging wizard. Magda spent an entire day piecing together our letterpress leaf jungle leaves and then Jenna spent the evening among the rafters securing the leaves to the beams.

The following day consisted of our first ever workshop – Lino & Type where we worked together to create a typeface from lino blocks – arranging and printing the tiles on an etching press. That evening we opened the exhibition. It was a wonderful turnout and really nice to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. On the Sunday, hangovers in-hand, we had another Lino & Type workshop.

Overall we had a great time, big thanks to Koskela and Spicers for making it happen, big thanks to all the amazing contributors and thanks to all those who came along on the night!

But it ain’t over yet. Get along to Koskela before October 20 to have a peep.

Look See

It’s all exhibitions all week here in the workshop. Website update

We’ve very quietly updated our website. There’s still a few tweaks that need to happen but we already think it’s a vast improvement over the old one. Especially now that we can put our blog posts away from the work. Not only that, it’s a responsive design so it should work really nicely on your tablet, phone and desktop!
